چکیده

There is a high prevalence of rib fractures in human remains from archeological contexts, but these are seldom the focus paleopathological studies pertaining skeletal trauma. This study aims to document fracture patterns Coimbra Identified Skeletal Collection, Department Life Sciences, University Coimbra. Specific this included estimation 252 individuals, both sexes (females: 128; males: 124), with age-at-death varying 20 96 years; and analysis relationship between age-at-death, biological sex, bone mineral density measured at proximal femur. The crude 6.3% (16 cases total individuals observed); while true rate 0.7% (38 fractured ribs relation 5656 studied). Males have been more affected than females (males: 10.5%, 13/124; females: 2.3%, 3/128). Individuals one or were significantly older (mean=66.19 years old; standard deviation [SD]=14.08) those who not experienced any (mean=50.41 SD=19.45). Bone was also associated presence only females. These results expand scientific awareness about collections.

Anatomy of a serial killer: differential diagnosis of tuberculosis based on rib lesions of adult individuals from the Coimbra Identified Skeletal Collection, Portugal.

The role of new bone formation on visceral surfaces of ribs in the diagnosis of tuberculosis (TB) in past human populations has been explored by many researchers, using both skeletal remains with known causes of death and archaeological samples. This study focuses, firstly, on adult skeletons from the Coimbra Identified Skeletal Collection in Portugal and investigates the skeletal manifestation...

Mycocerosic acid biomarkers for the diagnosis of tuberculosis in the Coimbra Skeletal Collection.

Tuberculosis has been a scourge of humans over many millennia, but questions remain regarding its evolution and epidemiology. Fossil biomarkers, such as DNA and long-chain mycolic acids, can be detected in ancient skeletal and other materials. The phthiocerol dimycocerosate waxes are also robust biomarkers for tuberculosis and sensitive methods are available for the detection of their mycoceros...

Rib stress fractures in rowers

Rib stress fracture (RSF) is a relatively frequent, severe and well documented overuse injury in elite rowers. The incidence of RSF has been estimated to be approximately 9 %, but prospective studies with rigorous injury surveillance of larger groups of rowers are needed to confirm this. The burden of RSFs lies primarily in the severity as most reported cases needed 6-8 weeks of rest, rehabilit...

Clinical Utility of Chest Computed Tomography in Patients with Rib Fractures CT Chest and Rib Fractures

BACKGROUND Chest CT is more sensitive than a chest X-ray (CXR) in diagnosing rib fractures; however, the clinical significance of these fractures remains unclear. OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to determine the added diagnostic use of chest CT performed after CXR in patients with either known or suspected rib fractures secondary to blunt trauma. METHODS Retrospective cohort study ...
